Chico State Enterprises announces that the Plumas Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (Plumas Cal-TREX) will hold its seventh annual training program in Quincy from April 27 to May 3 at the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds.

The weeklong event aims to build participants’ confidence and skills through practical exercises, foster community and organizational partnerships, and enhance wildfire resilience. Attendees will develop a deeper understanding of prescribed fire objectives, learn fire containment and control techniques, and explore the ecological and traditional roles of fire. Training will include burn planning, water and tool handling, pump operations, firing, smoke monitoring, and securing prescribed fires.

“This marks our seventh Plumas TREX event and it has been rewarding to witness its evolution into a weeklong training and beneficial fire implementation event,” said Incident Commander Jon Dvorak. “We are particularly excited about this year and the intention to focus on live-fire activities each day, conditions permitting.”

With growing interest in proactive wildfire preparedness, Plumas Cal-TREX provides an important platform for education, collaboration, and hands-on training. The program is supported by a wide range of local partners, including the Plumas Underburn Cooperative, Plumas County Fire Safe Council, Feather River College, Plumas National Forest, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Lassen-Modoc Unit, and others.

Organizers emphasize that fire has historically played a vital role in maintaining healthy Sierra Nevada ecosystems through natural and Indigenous fire practices. However, more than a century of fire suppression, climate change, and population growth have increased the risk of severe wildfires. Reintroducing prescribed fire is essential for habitat restoration, community protection, and honoring cultural traditions.
