The City of Portola will conduct a planned wildland fire evacuation exercise Thursday to test emergency response procedures, communication systems, and evacuation coordination.

The drill is scheduled for Thursday, July 16, beginning at 10 a.m., and will impact the south side of Portola, including areas south of the Feather River, as well as the Nakoma and Iron Horse communities.

City officials emphasize that this is only a drill and that participation by residents is completely voluntary.

Residents in the affected areas who are signed up for the Genasys emergency alert system may receive notifications from the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office with instructions related to the exercise.

Residents on the north side of Portola, north of the Feather River, will not receive notifications, and no voluntary action is being requested from those areas.

Officials say the exercise is intended to validate wildfire evacuation procedures, emergency public notification systems, traffic management plans, interagency communication, and healthcare coordination. The drill will also help identify potential gaps that can be addressed before a real emergency occurs.

Residents with questions about the exercise can contact the City Manager’s Office at 530-832-6800
