Caltrans District 2 will implement a permanent speed limit reduction along State Route 44 beginning Thursday, April 2, to improve safety for motorists and those entering the highway from nearby side streets.
The new 55 mph speed limit will apply from just east of Airport Road to just east of Millville Plains Road. With this change, State Route 44 will now have a consistent 55 mph speed limit from just east of Airport Road in Redding all the way to Shingletown.
Traffic studies conducted in the area found that collision rates in the current 65 mph zone were about average compared to similar highways statewide. However, in the adjacent 55 mph zone, the collision rate is less than half of the statewide average, indicating improved safety conditions where lower speeds are in place.
To enhance safety and create a more consistent driving environment, Caltrans is extending the 55-mph speed limit through this section of the highway.
“The safety of the traveling public is always our first priority, and we are continually looking for ways to make our roadways safer,” said Toby Crawford, Caltrans District 2 Traffic Division Manager and Safe Systems Lead. “Adjusting the speed limit in this area is one of the steps we can take to help improve safety for all roadways users, including those entering the highway from side streets.”
Crews will install new speed limit signs throughout the corridor, and Changeable Message Signs (CMS) will be placed in the area ahead of the change to alert motorists of the upcoming reduction.
Caltrans encourages motorists traveling through the area to slow down, remain alert for updated signage, and watch for vehicles entering the highway from side streets.
