Caltrans will begin removing large boulders at the Pit One Grade Rockfall Mitigation project on June 1. The project’s scope includes constructing a catchment area and installing rockfall mitigation features on Highway 299 in Shasta County. The project is located west of Fall River Mills between the Pit River Falls and Canyon Vista Point and Pit No. 1 Powerhouse Road.

The project will construct an 8-ft wide catchment area adjacent to the roadway and install new rockfall mitigation drapery systems, improving public and worker safety. Some loose and unstable rock will be removed through scaling. A select area of large boulders will be removed by excavation. Another select area of large boulders will be held in place by anchored mesh. Excavated material will be placed in a disposal site located within the project limits. The existing roadway will be cold planed and overlayed with 0.1-ft Hot Mix Asphalt to restore the roadway after construction. Additional scope includes replacing or improving six culvert segments and installing new pavement markers, signs, delineators and object markers.
Tentatively starting June 1, there will be extended traffic control on Highway 299 at the project location west of Fall River Mills. Motorists can anticipate this traffic control from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – through Friday at this location. Expected delays will extend up to 89 minutes, while large boulder excavation operations happen on the project. These boulder removal operations are expected to last 10 days.
Please avoid using the Pit River directly south of the project limits/along Highway 299 during the construction of this project.
The $13.2 million project includes 100 remaining working days, with all days requiring traffic control. 24-hour traffic control will be implemented at times when the roadway is unpaved. The entire project is expected to be completed by November of 2026.
Contractor Bugler Construction Inc., North Region Construction and Caltrans District 2 thank the traveling public and local communities for their patience during the construction of the project.
