A suspected drunk driver was arrested early Monday after California Highway Patrol officers spotted a damaged vehicle throwing sparks along State Route 89 near Gold Lake Highway.

According to CHP’s Quincy Area office, officers observed the southbound vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed around 1:38 a.m. on July 14. As they caught up to it, they saw the tailgate dragging on the roadway, creating sparks.

During the traffic stop, officers determined the driver had been involved in a crash moments earlier. The driver showed signs of alcohol impairment and underwent a DUI evaluation.

CHP said the driver’s blood alcohol concentration was more than twice the legal limit. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The agency is reminding motorists to plan ahead before drinking by designating a sober driver or arranging alternate transportation, emphasizing that impaired driving continues to pose a serious risk to everyone on the road.
