The City is set to tackle a full agenda on Wednesday, among the items are plans to develop Barry Reservoir.

Susanville purchased Barry Reservoir in 2021 for 600,000 dollars, and plans are finally advancing for its restoration and enhancement. The City Council is set to consider authorizing Mayor Mendy Schuster to execute a Site-Specific Agreement with Ducks Unlimited, Inc. for a Wetland Enhancement Project.

Ducks Unlimited, with support from a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service grant, plans to restore and enhance the waterfowl habitat at the city-owned reservoir. The project includes excavating the reservoir to increase water storage capacity, creating nesting islands, and restoring native vegetation on disturbed areas. The enhancements will span 21 acres of palustrine emergent wetlands and 10 acres of mixed riparian habitat, tackling decades of sediment buildup that has limited the reservoir’s capacity and ecological value since its construction in 1944.

The site-specific agreement with Ducks Unlimited will outline the city’s responsibilities, including providing in-kind services valued up to $14,480 for restoration efforts and ongoing maintenance at Barry Reservoir.

This development marks a significant step forward in the city’s original goal to enhance Barry Reservoir, optimizing it as a vital water resource and recreational asset for Susanville.
