A lighthearted Fourth of July fundraiser has brought the Susanville Blue Star Moms one step closer to sending local veterans on the trip of a lifetime.

The organization announced it raised approximately $1,800 through its annual Operation Stars & Stripes fundraiser, a patriotic twist on the popular “flocking” fundraiser in which participants could pay to have patriotic decorations placed on a friend’s lawn, pay a rescue fee to have them removed, or purchase “surrender insurance” to avoid being targeted altogether.

According to the Blue Star Moms, community members enthusiastically embraced the fundraiser, with many choosing to surprise friends and neighbors, while others simply donated to support the cause.

Every dollar raised will go toward the group’s goal of sending 20 Lassen County veterans on an Honor Flight. The Honor Flight program provides veterans with an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where they visit the memorials dedicated to their military service.

In a message thanking the community, the Blue Star Moms said the success of the fundraiser reflects the strong support Lassen County residents continue to show for local veterans and military families.

The organization also joked that while neighborhood lawns can “officially rest easy,” residents shouldn’t get too comfortable—Operation Stars & Stripes is expected to return next year.
