The commercial cannabis referendum petition pushing back against Susanville’s newly adopted ordinance has double the amount of needed signatures; meaning it will be headed back to the council. A local group organized the referendum that seeks to have the ordinance repealed or placed on the November ballot. Over 1000 signatures were collected throughout the city by the local group who felt the ordinance should not be left to the decision of the council. At last evening’s council meeting City Administrator Dan Newton detailed what happens next stating there will be a 30-day period in which the city clerk will review the signatures and verify their authenticity. The city’s attorney Margaret Long will also review the petition to verify its legality. After verifying the ordinance will return to the council for a decision on whether to repeal it or create a ballot measure. Results are expected by the end of July, the currently approved ordinance will not go into effect until the referendum process is finalized by a decision of the council.
