Plumas National Forest officials are urging caution and patience during the spring recreation season. Despite the enticing sunny days, the intersection of winter and summer activities poses potential dangers and challenges.

Forest Recreation and Lands Program Manager Erika Brenzovich highlighted incidents of vandalism and damage to recreation facilities, including cut locks and broken gates. Many sites remain inaccessible due to lingering snow, safety issues, and post-winter cleanup or are undergoing preparations for management by new concessionaires.

In response to public pressure, Beckwourth District Ranger Mike Rahe opened the Lunker Point Boat Launch at Frenchman Lake while keeping the Frenchman Boat Launch closed due to safety concerns and concessionaire preparations.

Brenzovich emphasized the importance of waiting for official inspections and placements of boat docks to prevent damage that strains limited funds allocated for facility maintenance. Additionally, she warned of challenging conditions on roads and trails, urging you to be prepared for softening snow and sudden weather changes.

With spring weather in the Sierra Nevada being highly variable, officials advised against underestimating risks, especially regarding fast-moving rivers, flooding, and hypothermia risks in cold waterways despite the warming weather. They stressed the necessity of proper clothing and supplies and informing someone of travel plans before embarking on outdoor activities.

Despite recent warm weather, officials cautioned that temperatures are expected to drop significantly over the weekend, with potential rain and snowfall. Forest officials ask that if visiting to prioritize your safety and while everyone is anxious for the warmer season, to have patience during the spring recreation season.
