Richard DuVarney, County Appointed Administrator Plumas Unified School District, stated as part of Plumas County Office of Education and Unified School District’s work to address the district’s $9.5 million structural deficit, several difficult decisions have been made. They include the closure of Pioneer Elementary School, reductions in staffing, and significant changes to transportation services are among the most substantial reductions.
PUSD will not offer general home-to-school transportation during the 2026–2027 school year. Transportation will be limited to students whose services are required by law or identified through an individual student plan or program.
The district will retain two large buses and five smaller special education buses. The larger buses may be used for academic field trips and student opportunities, including Plumas to Pacific, Career Technical Education activities, and college exploration trips. Unfortunately, the district will not be able to provide transportation for athletic events during the 2026–2027 school year. Staffing ratios are becoming more aligned, and are seeing strong progress across many departments. Richard DuVarney stated this year, the focus will be on rebuilding systems, strengthening services, and providing the best possible learning experience for every PUSD student.
