Following yet another vegetation fire ignited by an illegal campfire, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents and visitors to exercise caution in outdoor settings, especially near dry areas. The Bassetts Fire, reported on October 25 around 3:30 p.m., was sparked near Milton Reservoir, leading to a robust response from the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and local fire agencies. The fire, located about six miles south of Bassetts, grew to roughly 1 acre before crews successfully contained its forward progression.

With heavy timber and brush fueling the blaze, firefighters, including airtanker crews and a helicopter team, arrived swiftly to combat the flames. By 4:45 p.m., firefighting teams from Tahoe Helitack and additional engine crews had boxed in the fire with retardant and conducted water drops to halt its spread. Crews remained on-site through the night to ensure thorough mop-up and monitoring of the affected area.

Preliminary investigations suggest that an illegal campfire was the cause of the fire, although no suspects have been identified. Sheriff Mike Fisher underscored the risks associated with such actions, saying, “Illegal campfires present an ongoing risk in our region. We need everyone to take responsibility by following fire regulations and understanding the potential consequences of reckless actions. These fires endanger lives, property, and our valuable forests.”

As the fire season continues, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public to follow all U.S. Forest Service guidelines, avoid setting illegal campfires, and report any suspicious activity.

To report illegal campfire activity or for more information, the public can contact the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 289-3700.
