Due to lingering snowpack, the Plumas National Forest says many recreational sites may remain closed into mid-summer. The recreational staff has been unable to access these sites to complete repairs and perform maintenance for visitors delaying their opening. A few of those sites include those at Little Grass Valley Reservoir, Bucks Lake, and Lakes Basin recreation areas. Plumas National Forest Recreation and Lands Program Manager Erika Brenzovich say work needs to be completed includes “hazard tree removal, opening and testing of water systems, and completing checks to ensure the campgrounds are safe.”
Opening dates remain tentative and subject to change yet, some sites, such as Wyandotte, Tooms, and Peninsula Tent campgrounds, and Tooms Boat Launch, may open as early as June 23, while others like Horse Camp, Running Deer, Red Feather, and Little Beaver campgrounds may open in mid-July.
Gold Lake, Lakes Basin, Bucks Lake Campgrounds, and Sandy Point are also expected to open on June 23, but there is a risk of delayed openings.
Frenchman Lake and Antelope Lake campgrounds are open, but some boat docks’ status is pending.
Hallsted and Spanish Creek campgrounds are open, but Caribou Road campgrounds remain closed due to the Highway 70 closure and slide repair work. There is no projected date for those sites to reopen.
Road construction projects near Milsap Bar Campground and in the Frenchman Lake Recreation Area are underway. You can expect a few possible detours and delays of up to 45 minutes. While visiting some sites may also not have potable water, you are advised to pack plenty in.
The forest service reminds you that weather conditions continue t be unsettled, with cold lakes and rivers and the risk of thunderstorms. Swift-moving water with debris can be dangerous, and you should use caution until flow conditions are safe.
