Modoc Joint Unified School District is addressing vandalism and inappropriate behavior in student restrooms across several campuses.

Superintendent Beckie Lewis reported incidents at Alturas Elementary, Modoc Middle, and Modoc High Schools. Problems at Alturas Elementary include flooding from paper towels blocking sensors and drains, fecal matter on walls, clogged toilets, removed soap dispensers, and a sink pulled from the wall. Plumbing fixtures have been repeatedly tampered with.

At Modoc Middle School, staff recorded clogged toilets, misuse of restroom time during class, broken sensor equipment caused by students standing on toilets, and outlets stuffed with pencils and paper. Reports of vaping in restrooms also raised concerns.

Modoc High School experienced damage after a toilet was removed, plus a restroom door was forcibly taken off with its hardware destroyed.

Lewis called the behavior unsafe and disrespectful, stressing that it disrupts sanitary conditions for students. Cleaning and repairs are pulling funds and labor away from student programs, staffing, and classroom resources.

The district may consider alternative restroom options, including portable facilities, if behavior does not improve.

Officials plan to increase supervision near restrooms, review camera coverage in adjacent areas where allowed, and apply progressive discipline. Possible consequences range from suspension and restitution to loss of privileges and involving law enforcement.

Families are urged to talk with children about appropriate behavior and encourage reporting unsafe or destructive actions.

How can your family help prevent vandalism and promote respect within your schools? What steps can students take to protect their learning environment? The district seeks everyone’s cooperation to maintain safe and functional facilities.
