Karen Haines, the founder of Modoc Feline Humane Society, highlights the national issue of veterinarian shortages and the financial struggles many face in accessing basic animal care. In Modoc County, however, residents benefit from affordable services due to discounts offered by Modoc Veterinary Center to local humane societies. These discounts, combined with fundraising and donations, allow Modoc Feline and High Plateau Humane Societies to subsidize the costs of essential veterinary procedures for the community.
Modoc Feline Humane Society (MFHS) was established to complement the work of High Plateau Humane Society by specifically addressing the outdoor cat overpopulation problem. A critical aspect of managing this issue is encouraging cat owners to sterilize their cats before they reach five months of age, which is when they can start reproducing. February is highlighted as an important month for this initiative, as it precedes the kitten season starting in March.
MFHS offers several voucher programs valid through June 30, 2025, to assist with the cost of spaying, neutering, and vaccinating cats:
- $30 for spay/neuter and vaccinations for community cats, available to everyone.
- $50 for spay/neuter services for pet cats from low-income families.
- $15 for the FVRCP vaccine for pet cats from low-income families.
- $10 for the rabies vaccine for pet cats from low-income families.
- Negotiable rates for the Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) Program for community cats.
To purchase vouchers or borrow humane traps, residents can contact Betty at 530-708-078. A $10 refundable deposit is required for trap borrowing. For details about the TNR Program, Karen can be reached at 760-898-4373. More information about MFHS can be found at their website.
Karen expresses her gratitude to the Modoc Veterinary Center, supporters, volunteers, and the beneficiaries of their services who contribute to making affordable animal care possible. The collaborative effort ensures the health and well-being of animals in the community.
