In the early hours of October 6, a fire broke out near Stampede Reservoir, prompting a swift response from multiple agencies. At around 3:25 AM, Cal-Fire alerted the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office about the blaze, which was burning through thick brush and timber in a remote area on Merrill Peak.

Sierra County deputies, already in the area on an unrelated call, joined fire crews from the Tahoe National Forest, Sierra County Fire, and two Roen dozers. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Glenn Scribner, 58, of Reno, Nevada, who was behaving erratically and appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance.

Following an investigation, Scribner was arrested for arson under California Penal Code 451(c). He was taken to Tahoe Forest Hospital for a medical evaluation before being booked at the Nevada County Jail. U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement officers arrived later to assist with evidence collection and further investigation.

Thanks to the quick action of the combined agencies, the fire was contained to less than two acres. The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office commended the teamwork that helped prevent further damage in the area.
