Memorial Day Weekend Safety Tips for Local Waterways and Recreation Sites

SHARE NOW

As we prepare to honor those who lost their lives in military service this Memorial Day weekend, local waterways and recreation sites are expecting an influx of visitors. Whether you’re heading to the National Forest or another favorite spot, keep these safety tips in mind:

Be Water Smart: Rivers and streams are still cold and moving fast. Use extreme caution by observing warnings, wearing appropriate safety gear like life jackets, and understanding how to respond if someone is in trouble. Learn how to Recreate Responsibly in water

Be Fire Safe: Minimize your impact by being prepared to extinguish any fire with water or a shovel and by keeping your campfire low and monitored. If you are outside of developed campgrounds, make sure to obtain a campfire permit

Stay Bear-Aware: Store food and other scented items in bear-resistant containers at all times. Dispose of trash properly, and remain at a safe and respectful distance from wildlife.

Plan Ahead and Prepare: Some sites may be closed due to lingering snowpack, storm damage, or unsafe conditions. District offices will be closed on Monday, May 27, in observance of the holiday. You can Plan Ahead and Prepare by visiting recreation.gov to check for open and available campgrounds and by calling district offices with any questions.

Stay safe and enjoy the outdoors responsibly this Memorial Day weekend!
