If you’re planning a Memorial Day road trip, be prepared to pay more at the pump. California gas prices are now at their highest level for the holiday weekend in four years, with the statewide average holding at about $6.14 per gallon.

That’s more than a dollar higher than this time last year and well above the current national average of $4.56 a gallon.

According to AAA Mountain West Group, increased travel demand and ongoing global oil supply concerns are helping keep fuel prices elevated as the busy summer driving season begins.

Among major California cities, San Francisco drivers are seeing some of the highest prices at around $6.33 a gallon, while Sacramento averages just over $6.10.

Federal energy data also shows gasoline supplies declined slightly last week while demand continued to rise.

AAA is encouraging drivers to save fuel by avoiding excessive speeding and idling, checking tire pressure, and using regular gasoline unless premium fuel is specifically required by their vehicle.

Meanwhile, public EV charging costs in California remain around 46 cents per kilowatt hour, among the highest rates in the nation.
