California State Parks will start a pilot program requiring reservations for day-use visits to McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park during peak days.
This reservation system begins Friday, May 15, and runs through Sunday, September 27. It applies only on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Monday through Thursday visits do not need reservations.
The goal is to reduce overcrowding and improve visitor safety. Over recent years, visitor numbers have doubled, pushing the park beyond its capacity. This has led to increased erosion, damage to vegetation, traffic backups, illegal parking, and long entry lines. Visitors have often faced delays of up to two hours to re-enter the park after leaving. Sometimes the park has had to close temporarily due to full capacity.
Reservations will be required for day-use entry and cost $10 per vehicle plus a $1 processing fee. Reservations can be made online through the park’s website. The park will issue 103 parking passes valid from 8 a.m. to noon, another 103 passes valid from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 35 passes valid all day. Only one reservation per vehicle per day is allowed.
Vehicles must be standard passenger vehicles that fit one regular parking space. Vehicles towing boats need a reservation and must pay boat launch fees on arrival. Oversized vehicles, buses, and recreational vehicles are not permitted during the reservation period. Visitors with campground or cabin reservations automatically have day-use access included.
Burney Falls is a popular destination known for its waterfall and outdoor recreation. Its rising popularity has strained its infrastructure, which dates back to the 1960s. The park’s small size and sensitive environment limit options for expansion. This new system aims to manage crowds better without further harming the park.
What does this mean for your visit? If you plan to go on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or holiday between mid-May and late September, you should book your reservation in advance. This will help you avoid long waits or being turned away.
Are you ready to plan your visit with a reservation in hand? This system could make your day at Burney Falls smoother and more enjoyable.
