Residents of Lassen County and eastern Plumas County should prepare for several days of hot weather, with the National Weather Service issuing both a Heat Advisory and an Extreme Heat Watch beginning later this week.
The Heat Advisory takes effect at 8 a.m. Wednesday and remains in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday. An Extreme Heat Watch will then follow from Thursday morning through Sunday morning.
Forecasters expect daytime highs in lower valley locations to reach 95 to 102 degrees, while overnight temperatures will remain relatively warm, ranging from 58 to 65 degrees. The region is expected to experience moderate HeatRisk, increasing the potential for heat-related illnesses.
Communities included in the advisory and watch include Susanville, Westwood, Portola, Loyalton, and Sierraville, along with surrounding areas of Lassen, eastern Plumas, and eastern Sierra counties.
Health officials recommend taking precautions during the hot weather, including:
Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
Limit time outdoors during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
Check on older adults, young children, and others who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
The National Weather Service notes that heat-related illnesses become more likely during prolonged periods of high temperatures, particularly for people working or recreating outdoors or those without access to adequate cooling.
Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts and be prepared for potentially hotter conditions later this week if the Extreme Heat Watch is upgraded to a warning.
