After years of planning, setbacks and volunteer work, improvements at the Loyalton City Park are moving forward with upgraded recreation facilities designed to serve residents of all ages, according to a report from the Sierra Booster.
The project’s roots go back to a recreation grant secured in 2019, but progress was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, rising construction costs and changes in project plans. In 2025, local pickleball players revisited the grant and began working with Little League and community members to find a way to make the best use of the remaining funds before the deadline.
The city ultimately decided to focus on improvements to the pickleball/tennis courts and Little League field, projects expected to benefit a wide range of residents. The courts are used by local schools for physical education and tennis lessons, while the Little League field provides summer recreation opportunities for youth.
The newly improved pickleball and tennis courts are now open for public play, with organized pickleball sessions scheduled Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8 to 10 a.m., Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday mornings at 9 a.m.
The Sierra Booster reported that volunteers played a key role in keeping costs down, helping with cleanup, fencing removal and other work. Additional support came from local businesses and community members, including donations for Little League improvements.
Organizers are encouraging residents to use the updated facilities and continue supporting community recreation efforts, noting that the project was made possible through years of planning and local volunteer involvement.
