The 5th Annual Lost Sierra Plein Air Festival takes place May 9 through May 17, hosted by Bear Creek Frames in Quincy, California. The week-long event welcomes artists of all skill levels to paint outdoors while capturing the scenic beauty of the Lost Sierra, with its mountain peaks, rural towns, and panoramic vistas.
“This is a wonderful event that brings plein air artists from across the country to the Lost Sierra to capture the region’s beautiful landscapes and scenery,” says Mark Reynolds, owner of Bear Creek Frames and festival host. “Plein air painting comes from the French term en plein air, meaning ‘in the open air.’ Artists paint outside, facing ever-changing light and adapting to whatever weather the day brings—which in the mountains can change throughout the day. Though challenging, the region offers such beauty that it is not considered an obstacle.”
The festival begins May 9 with a two-day watercolor workshop taught by renowned artist Geoffrey Allen, offering participants the opportunity to hone their skills and talent from an experienced instructor. The competition officially begins May 11, 7:00am daily, with artists checking in to receive their packets, have their canvases stamped, and learn about some of the best painting locations throughout the area. Artists will spend the next five days exploring the area for the best “subject” and creating original works inspired by the landscapes of the Lost Sierra. The competition continues through May 15, concluding at noon.
Participating artists may submit up to two paintings to be displayed and judged at the
Artist Reception and Awards Ceremony, May 15 from 5:00 to 8:00pm at the Sierra
Valley Preserve Nature Center, located just south of Highway 70 on A23 in Beckwourth. Awards will include $800 for First Place, $600 for Second Place, and $400 for Third Place, along with three Honorable Mention awards of $100 each. A People’s Choice Award of $250 will also be presented, allowing attendees to vote for their favorite piece.
The festival concludes with Art in Pioneer Park, held May 16 and 17 from 10:00am to 4:00 pm. in East Quincy. This event invites the public to watch artists at work, peruse original artwork, and meet the painters. The first day features the popular two-hour Quick Draw Competition, where artists race against the clock to complete a painting on site, followed by the Off-the-Easel Sale, allowing visitors to purchase freshly completed artwork. Additional crafters and artisans will also be part of the two-day event.
Artist registration for the festival is $55, with the optional watercolor workshop available for $300. For more information or to register, visit lostsierrapleinair.com. Lodging information for visitors traveling to the region can be found at plumascounty.org/places-to-stay.
