California Highway Patrol Campaign Cuts Fatal Crashes and Boosts Traffic Safety on Highway 395

The California Highway Patrol’s Susanville Area Office recently concluded a successful 90-day enforcement campaign along U.S. Highway 395, spanning from the Oregon border to the Nevada line. Partnering with CHP offices in Alturas and Quincy, the initiative targeted key factors contributing to crashes, including speeding, unsafe passing, impaired driving, distracted driving, and commercial vehicle violations.
Key outcomes from the campaign include:
• A 79% increase in DUI arrests, compared to the previous three-year average for
the same period.
• An 850% increase in Distracted Driver Violations, compared to the previous
three-year average for the same period.
• An 87% increase in Speeding Violations, compared to the previous three-year
average for the same period.
• A 50% reduction in property damage traffic crashes, compared to the previous
three-year average for the same period.
• A 100% reduction of fatal crashes, compared to the previous three-year average
for the same period.
Commander, Lacey Carney emphasizes the importance of safe driving habits:
• Leave early for your destination so you are not in a rush.
• Be patient for the next safe passing lane.
• Do not drive distracted – that text message can wait.
• Do not drive intoxicated.
• Always wear your safety belt, and ensure children are properly restrained.
• Reduce your speed and increase your distance in between other vehicles.
