Incarcerated men from Pine Grove Youth Conservation Camp were recently recognized by the California legislature for their firefighting contributions. Accompanied by camp staff, the Pine Grove hand crews toured the capitol, interacting with legislators and officials.
The California State Senate organized a special day for the fire crews, allowing them to explore the workings of government. CDCR Secretary Jeff Macomber expressed pride in the crews’ efforts, particularly highlighting their involvement in battling fires in Los Angeles. Seven crew members received a resolution on the Senate floor and in the Assembly for their service.
Correctional Officer Steven Herrera, who worked alongside the firefighters, affirmed that the recognition was deserved, noting the hard work they put in. One crew member, Edgar D., shared his pride upon hearing his name called during the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of self-advocacy based on discussions with officials.
Scott Budnick, a film producer and founder of the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, praised the fire camp program as one of the best rehabilitative programs in the nation, particularly effective for young adults. He highlighted the structure, discipline, work skills, and leadership qualities the program fosters.
In addition to wildfire response, the crews engage in various community projects when not active on fires. Macomber noted the program’s success in reducing incidents and violence, providing participants with promising opportunities for their futures beyond incarceration.
