Halloween spending is set to hit nearly $12 billion this year, with consumers diving into the spooky season earlier than ever. Katherine Cullen, National Retail Federation Vice President of Industry and Consumer Insights noted that many shoppers have been eager to celebrate fall, with around half beginning their Halloween shopping more than a month in advance.
Though spending is down 5% from last year, the holiday has grown in popularity, especially among Gen Z and millennials. “Before the pandemic, Halloween spending was around $8 billion. Now, it’s closer to $12 billion,” Cullen said.
This year’s costume trends are inspired by pop culture, with kids opting for Spider-Man, Beetlejuice, and Mario, while adults stick to classics like witches and vampires.
As consumers look ahead to the holiday season, Cullen anticipates continued elevated spending, as people seek normalcy and joy amidst global uncertainties.
