QUINCY–It may not have been the easiest road traveled, but in the end that road will lead right back to Quincy next week.
Feather River dropped their first Friday game to Monterey Peninsula, 9-5, forcing a deciding loser’s out game 30 minutes later. The Golden Eagles shook off a second upset attempt in decisive fashion, downing the Lobos 15-5 to advance to the NorCal Super Regionals, at the Eagles Nest next Thursday-Saturday (May 9-11).
The Super Regional will feature three squads in a double-elimination format, with Sacramento City College joining Feather River, along with the winner of Saturday’s Skyline vs. Ohlone contest.
MONTEREY PENINISULA 9, FEATHER RIVER 5
The Lobos stunned the Golden Eagles with some late-game offense to win Friday’s opener to force the final rubber match game.
Monterey Peninsula scored three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to overcome a 4-3 deficit and pull away for the win.
Earlier, Jared Stevenson hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Shane Danley hit a solo shot in the sixth to help build the lead. But the Lobos followed with the three runs in the sixth on just two hits and two FRC errors, and MPC’s Hayden Jung-Goldberg hit a three-run homer in the seventh to seal the outcome.
FEATHER RIVER 15, MONTEREY PENINSULA 5
With their backs against the proverbial wall, the Golden Eaagles came out with a vengence in game two.
FRC scored three runs in the first, all without a hit, taking advantage of walks and a pair of Lobo errors. Then, with a narrow 4-2 lead in the fourth, the home team erupted for nine runs to put the game on ice.
Feather River sent 16 batters to the plate in that marathon inning, scoring nine times on five hits. They even left three runners on base before all was said and done.
The Golden Eagles had 10 hits in the game, all singles with the exception of Stevenson’s double. Stevenson drove in four runs in the game, while Denton went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI.
Rocco Crow and Kolt Kurzman had a pair of hits, and Crow scored three times and drove in a pair of runs.
Feather River improved to 34-8 with the split, while Monterey Peninsula ends their season at 20-23.
The brackets are set for the Super Regionals with Feather River hosting the Panthers of Sacramento City and the Trojans of Skyline College. Skyline and Sac City will play the first game on Thursday at 11am and FRC will play the loser of game 1 at 3:30pm that afternoon. We are honored and excited to be hosting such a strong bracket of teams for this Super Regional. Admission will be $12 for adults and $8 for students/children per day. These games will all be live streamed, as usual.
