The USDA Forest Service will invest $78 million in wildfire resiliency through the Community Wildfire Defense Grant program.
33 projects in California were selected for the first round of funding, including projects in Plumas and Sierra counties. The Feather River Resource Conservation District will receive over $8.5 million for emergency forest restoration on 5,000 acres, while the Plumas County Fire Safe Council will receive nearly $7 million for hazardous fuels assessment and implementation on 2,000 acres. Sierra County will also receive funding for fuel reduction on 500 acres and planning and project coordination for the entire county.
The investments are part of a larger $3.5 billion package aimed at reducing wildfire risks, detecting wildfires, reforming the firefighter workforce, and increasing pay for federal wildland firefighters.
