Susanville Community Garden Brings ESL Program to Students

The Susanville Community Garden brings a new English as a second language program to students. Every Friday the group meets after school to prep and tend to the gardens. Mrs. Shaw, Susanville School Districts English Language Coordinator brought the idea to the Local Area Revitalization Project Co-Op coordinators, Seth Anderson and CEO David Teeter as an idea to provide an outdoor educational activity to those who otherwise may not have access to outdoor activities including youth sports.  Being an English language learner herself she wanted to immerse the children she served into a program where they could connect not only with the English language in a tangible way but also as a way to connect with the community. The school district currently has 9 different languages spoken within the schools and Mrs. Shaw believes providing this opportunity will benefit the progress in building English language skills in these children. The group meets every Friday around 2:45, following school release. If you are interested you can reach out to Mrs. Shaw for more information or you can meet head down to the Susanville community garden located by the Pat Murphy Little League Fields.
