UPDATE: Susanville Police Officer Involved Shooting During Machete Attack Under Investigation

Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at approximately 12:25 a.m., two Officers from the Susanville Police Department were involved in a critical incident in the 300 block of Richmond Road that resulted in an officer-involved shooting.
Preliminary information indicates that during the incident, one officer was attacked by an individual armed with a machete. The officer discharged his service weapon during the encounter. Law enforcement and medical personnel immediately rendered aid; however, the subiect succumbed to his iniuries at the scene.
The officer involved sustained injuries during the attack. The officer was taken to the hospital where he was treated and later released
The Susanville Police Department recognizes the seriousness of this incident and the loss of life involved. We also acknowledge the impact these events have on everyone affected, including the family of the deceased, responding personnel, and members of the community.
The Lassen County Law Enforcement Interagency Investigation ‘Team remains actively engaged in a thorough and independent investigation. Investigators continue to process evidence, conduct interviews, and review all available information related to the incident. Because the investigation is ongoing and still in its early stages, additional details are not being released at this time.
Body-worn camera video of the incident exists and will be shared with the community once the investigation allows and appropriate review processes have been completed.
Personnel involved in this incident have been placed on critical incident leave in accordance with department policy.
