While we’re technically in spring, winter conditions are still holding strong, especially at the southwest entrance of the Lassen Volcanic National Park, where a hefty 7 feet of snow remains from the winter. This weekend’s late-season snowstorm only adds to the snowpack; the park received nearly 3 feet of new powder.
The park service cautions that the blanket of snow may not last. As temperatures rise and the days get longer, the melting process begins, lasting well into summer. Despite the piling snowflakes, which add layers to the snowpack, as they compact and freeze into ice and eventually begin to melt, the snowpack will become thoroughly saturated, and the steady melting process kicks in.
Those who visited the park over the weekend likely faced snow-covered roads and chain restrictions, yet as the sun has returned, you can check the Volcanic Park’s latest road conditions by visiting the National Perk Service website and Caltrans QuickMap.
