The U.S. Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Region, is set to hold a virtual public hearing on Thursday, October 10, 2024, to discuss the use of helicopters and other mechanized equipment during upcoming wild horse gather operations in the Modoc and Inyo National Forests. The hearing will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. (PST) via Zoom.
Every year, the Forest Service holds this public hearing as required by federal law to get feedback on using helicopters and other tools to help manage wild horse populations.
Recent surveys show there are way more wild horses in the Devil’s Garden Plateau and Montgomery Pass areas than there should be for a healthy ecosystem. To bring the numbers down, the Forest Service plans to gather horses from these areas over the next year.
