The City of Portola invites the community to gather for its annual community cleanup and scavenger hunt Saturday, Sept. 19, from 8 a.m. to noon.

“This isn’t your ordinary cleanup,” said organizers. “To make the effort more fun, we teamed up with local businesses to turn this cleanup into a game.” While helping to collect rubbish and beautify the city, participants will also be on the lookout for Clean Green tickets hidden around cleanup areas. Each ticket can be redeemed for prizes donated by local businesses.

When the work is done, all volunteers can gather for lunch at the park sponsored by the Rotary Club of Portola.

Portola recently earned designation as a Clean California Community. Led by the California Department of Transportation, this statewide program rewards cities that keep their streets, parks and neighborhoods beautiful with access to grants and funding. “This event is a continuation of our drive to engage the community in activities that provide holistic benefits,” said city personnel.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. at Portola City Park, Gulling Street and Third Ave. Early birds get doughnuts while they last. Participants should wear gloves, appropriate footwear and hats, and bring water.

Everyone is welcome. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants must sign waivers of liability on the day of the event.

At noon, everyone will head back to the park for lunch and prize redemptions. “Join us to help keep Portola clean, win some prizes and have a little fun along the way,” said organizers. “May the best scavengers win!”
