The City Council has approved the allocation of resources to accommodate pickleball courts at Memorial Park, underscoring the growing push of this sport in the community.

With a budget of $2500 and a valuable commitment of staff time, an engineer will be exclusively dedicated to developing plans and estimates for integrating pickleball courts within Memorial Park’s tennis courts. The decision didn’t come without consideration, as the council routinely faces stretched resources, making every allocation a crucial choice.

Councilmember Stafford stood as the sole dissenting vote in approving the budget, citing concerns about the timing, given the need for resources in other city projects. **CLIP** However, despite the reservations, the council voted in favor of the proposal, acknowledging the fervent support from the pickleball community.

And the enthusiasm of the pickleball community was evident yet again, as they turned up in impressive numbers at City Hall to express their gratitude to the council for recognizing and prioritizing the nation’s fastest-growing sport. Mayor Pro Tem Thomas Hererra highlighted the proactive involvement of the group solidifying the decision to move forward with the funding.

The engineer, now dedicated to the task, will focus on drafting comprehensive plans and accurate estimates to rehabilitate and adapt the current tennis courts at Memorial Park to accommodate pickleball. Additionally, there are plans for a second phase of the project, which will explore potential locations for dedicated pickleball courts, with Memorial Park being the primary target for this endeavor.

The future looks promising for pickleball enthusiasts in the area.
