The Lassen Union High School Board is set to meet tonight at 6 PM to consider an important decision that has the support of many in the community—naming the school’s Pacific Street Gym in honor of Bob Levada, a beloved coach and figure in Lassen County.
The Lassen High School Alumni Association has thrown its unanimous support behind the proposal, which would see the gym renamed the “Bob Levada Gymnasium.” The association’s recommendations include more than just a name change. They propose repurposing the existing pedestal and plaque at the gym’s northeast corner to commemorate Levada, installing a new plaque in the foyer with a brief biography, and painting the gym’s new name on the east side of the building, facing Pacific Street.
In addition, the plan includes repainting the gym floor with Levada’s name prominently displayed in front of the score table and holding a naming ceremony during the first home game of the boys’ basketball league in January.
Levada, who made a lasting impact on the school and its students through decades of dedication, is remembered not only for his coaching but also for his commitment to fostering sportsmanship and community spirit. Alumni and current students alike have rallied around this effort, seeing it as a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to Lassen High School.
The school board’s decision tonight will be closely watched by many in the community who believe this recognition is long overdue. The meeting will take place at the high school’s administration building, and public comments are welcome.
Stay tuned for updates on the board’s decision and what it means for the legacy of Bob Levada at Lassen High School.
