As Labor Day weekend marks the final major holiday celebration before fall, the Lassen National Forest is urging visitors to recreate responsibly, especially as many forests are still recovering from recent wildfires and on-site repairs. This year, California’s national forests have experienced 606 wildfires, with over 96% of them caused by human activity rather than lightning.
Forest officials encourage everyone to plan ahead by checking for any closures and fire restrictions before heading out. Details on closures and fire restrictions specific to the Lassen National Forest can be found on their website at Lassen National Forest Alerts and Notices. Please note that all forest offices will be closed on Monday, September 2, 2024, in observance of Labor Day.
The Lassen National Forest also offers these tips to help visitors #RecreateResponsibly:
Be Prepared for Heat: California’s temperatures can still rise sharply in September, posing a risk of heat-related illnesses. Visitors should apply sunscreen, drink plenty of water, and plan outdoor activities early in the day to avoid the hottest periods.
Stay Hydrated: Always bring enough water for your outdoor adventures and be mindful of water conservation by ensuring all spigots, valves, and pumps at recreation sites are turned off after use.
Watch for Hazard Trees and High Water: Keep an eye on your surroundings, particularly in windy conditions. Avoid areas near damaged trees and be cautious around high waters, which may be swifter and colder due to snow runoff.
Leave No Trace: Protect wildlife and the environment by using designated trash receptacles or packing out all waste. Double-check your campsite for any forgotten items.
Minimize Campfire Impacts: Before starting a campfire, be sure to review and adhere to current fire restrictions. Consider using a portable camp stove to minimize environmental impact.
By following these guidelines, visitors can help protect public lands while enjoying a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.
