The Lassen National Forest acknowledged two Chester students for their entries in the Forests Services’ Archeology Essay contest.

The contest began in October and ran through the first weeks of December. Third-grade students across the five counties of Lassen, Plumas, Modoc, Tehama, Butte, and Siskiyou were able to participate.

They were asked to write an essay about a place at least 50 years old that meant something to them, why they liked it, and little about its significance.

The first-place prize went to a student in Cottonwood for her essay about Whiskeytown Lake. But taking second place was Ethan Martens from Chester, who wrote about the Subway caves of the Lassen Volcanic National Park, which included safety tips. A special Honorable Mention goes to Taylor Turner from Chester, CA, for their fun fact look and family’s historical connection to their favorite place, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA.

The Shasta Historical Society donated prizes for the top two winners, a One Year Family Pass to Turtle Bay Exploration Park in Redding for first place and to the runner-Up a copy of the book “Can you Dig it”.

Forest Supervisor Deb Bumpus said she can’t wait to see what third graders in our communities come up with next year.”
