The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Thursday afternoon through evening, largely affecting South Lassen County. Southwest winds are expected to reach up to 40 mph in certain locations and humidity levels dropping increasing the risk of rapidly spreading wildfires. During the fire weather watch you are advised to avoid any activities that could ignite fires and to adhere strictly to local fire restrictions.
As the week progresses, the weather is set to change dramatically. By the weekend, the tips of the mountain tops may see a dusting of snow. A cold front is expected to move down the Pacific Northwest coast, bringing with it a drop in temperatures that could reach freezing levels in the Sierra Nevada on Friday and Saturday evenings.
The higher elevations, such as Yosemite’s Tioga Pass and Mount Rose summit, might experience light snow yet not much is expected to stick around.
Although Overnight temperatures could approach freezing for some of the region’s higher elevations, local lows are expected to be near 40. Now is the time to prepare for this unseasonal cold snap.
