The park’s fire management crews plan to begin a 10-acre prescribed fire project in the Mineral Headquarters area this week. The ignition is expected to take just over one day, with residual burning lasting up to a week. The fire will be regularly staffed and monitored until it is completely out. Firefighters will begin burns late morning or early evening to keep smoke off State Highway 36.

The project, located on the western edge of Mineral, CA, along State Highway 36 East, includes the Lassen Volcanic National Park administrative headquarters area and adjacent sites. The goal is to break up accumulated fuels, mimicking historic fire activity to preserve the natural vegetation community and protect park and community infrastructure from wildfires.

Continued planned burns are expected as the fire management program at the Lassen Volcanic National Park aims to use prescribed fire to restore fire-dependent ecosystems and achieve resource management goals.
