Rescue in Remote Northern Washoe County
On the afternoon of May 18, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue (SAR) responded to a call for help from an elderly woman who became lost northwest of Gerlach after her GPS directed her into an extremely remote area.
She was able to find limited cell service and dial 911. WCSO SAR quickly deployed our Special Vehicle Unit (SVU), SAR Deputy Ediss, and a medic to locate her. Just before dark, the team successfully found the woman and escorted her to Gerlach for fuel, then to Fernley where she was safely reunited with her family.
As we celebrate Search and Rescue Week, thank you to the dedicated SAR volunteers on the ground and behind the scenes who helped bring this situation to a safe conclusion.
A reminder to travelers: GPS is a useful tool, but it’s not always reliable in remote areas. Before heading out, be sure to:
• Share your route and estimated arrival times with loved ones
• Bring a paper map or download directions for offline use
• Ensure your vehicle is fueled and ready for the terrain
And remember, if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team is ready to help.
