‘Double Dose’ of Heavy Snow, NOAA Issuing Blizzard Warnings

SHARE NOW

Blizzard warnings are in effect today for parts of Plumas county through Lassen as the region prepares for more impactful winter storms.

The Reno National Weather Service says the Sierra will face a ‘double dose’ of heavy snow, with an initial cold front followed by an even colder secondary wave. The first round is expected this afternoon into the evening, with a repeat performance late Tuesday morning into Tuesday evening. This could result in significant snowfall, with several feet expected to fall across the Sierra crest and in the Lake Tahoe Basin; locally, you can expect total snow accumulations ranging up to 3 feet. Additionally, winds are anticipated to gust as high as 50 mph, with conditions expected to be much worse across Sierra ridge tops, where wind gusts could briefly exceed 100 mph. The national weather service warns snowfall during these periods could exceed 2-3 inches per hour, resulting in those blizzard conditions.

Prepare now for possible travel disruptions, power outages, and dangerous conditions.

It is recommended to avoid travel if possible, and if you must, carry an emergency kit with extra food, water, and warm clothing.
