Plumas Supervisors will prepare for a no-standing room meeting this morning as the community is expected to show up in strong numbers in response to the latest staffing announcement from the Sheriff’s office. Just before the long Labor Day weekend, the department announced it would be reducing sheriff patrols to a single swing shift for the entire county.

Sheriff Johns emphasizes that it is the department’s duty to operate and manage a correctional facility as mandated by the state. He acknowledges that the ongoing recruitment and retention of correctional deputies pose a significant challenge within what he describes as the state’s lowest-paid agency. Consequently, this has led to the reassignment of patrol officers to jail duty to address staffing shortages.

While not initially scheduled for today’s agenda, Board Chairperson Hagwood has expressed the possibility of designating this topic as an emergency item for immediate discussion. Hagwood has also described the announcement as concerning, emphasizing his confidence in the county’s commitment to addressing the issues faced by the sheriff’s employees. He underscores the county’s proactive pursuit of remedies despite experiencing delays and complications resulting from the delayed budget approval process.

The supervisors will meet at the Quincy courthouse at 10 a.m.
