Caltrans has been awarded a $5.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Advanced Transportation Technology and Innovation (ATTAIN) program. The funding aims to enhance road safety and reduce travel times by integrating cutting-edge technology to provide real-time updates to drivers.
The project will connect vehicles and roadside equipment using cellular networks, offering drivers immediate access to critical information. Caltrans Director Tony Tavares highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating, “Real-time information provided through electronic highway message signs and other means will give drivers the heads-up they need to avoid congestion and have more reliable commutes.”
The grant will support advancements in connected vehicle (CV) technology, focusing on improving safety, data accuracy, and communication systems. Key goals of the project include:
Expanding the reach and accuracy of real-time traffic messages.
Ensuring compatibility among different CV hardware and applications.
Deploying video analytics at intersections to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety.
Utilizing multiple communication methods, including 5G and satellite, to benefit all road users.
This initiative is part of Caltrans’ broader mission to lead the way in technology-driven transportation solutions.
