BLM Issues Fire Restrictions for Northern California Public Lands

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is implementing fire restrictions for public lands managed by the Redding Field Office in Shasta, Tehama, Butte, Siskiyou, and Trinity counties, starting Wednesday, July 10. These measures aim to prevent wildfires and will be effective until further notice. The restrictions supplement the BLM’s year-round statewide fire prevention order.

Jennifer Mata, BLM Redding Field Office Manager, emphasized the significance of these restrictions, noting that most wildfires in California are human-caused and occur near roadways, communities, and recreational areas.

The fire restrictions include:

– Prohibition of campfires and barbecues, except within designated rings and grills at specified campgrounds.
– Use of portable stoves using gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel outside of developed areas is allowed with a valid California Campfire Permit.
– Restrictions on smoking, except within enclosed vehicles or buildings or at designated sites.
– Prohibition on motor vehicles and internal combustion engines off established roads or trails.
– Chainsaw use for personal firewood cutting is allowed until 1 p.m. daily.
– Fireworks, including “safe and sane” devices, are illegal on public lands.
– Restrictions on target shooting with certain types of ammunition and only allowed from a half-hour before sunrise to noon.

Violations of the fire prevention order can result in fines up to $100,000, imprisonment up to 12 months, and restitution for fire suppression and damage costs.
