The Beetles have arrived in Modoc County, but it is not the band.
Modoc County Department of Ag has received numerous reports of blister beetles around home sites.
Blister Beetles vary in size from 1-2.5cm and vary in coloring and markings from solid black to yellow with black stripes. They have a soft leather body and a large head. They are attracted to blooming alfalfa and are often found in flowering plants.
Blister beetles excrete a toxic blistering agent that can cause irritations and blisters when in contact with the eyes, skin, mouth, throat, and digestive tract. If you encounter this beetle or it lands on you, gently blow it away and wash the exposed areas with soap and water.
Additionally, Blister beetles are harmful to livestock and crops. If you notice a large number of grasshoppers, you might start seeing this beetle. To help manage your crop, harvest before bloom, do not condition hay in bloom stages, and use registered insecticides before you harvest. Remember to wear gloves, long sleeves, and long pants when gardening to avoid contact with the Bilster Bettles.
If you are concerned about exposure, call poison control at 1-800-222-1222. Contact the Modoc County Department of Agriculture for more information about this infestation.
