In celebration of California Archeology Month this October, third-grade students in Lassen, Shasta, Tehama, Butte, Plumas, Siskiyou, and Modoc Counties can enter their essays from October 1st through October 21st for a chance to win prizes.

To participate, students should submit an essay on a place at least 50 years old. They will then write about what this place means to them, why they like it, how old it is, and why it should be preserved.

Jennifer Norton, acting Forest Archaeologist on the Lassen National Forest, says, “ We want to encourage the development of writing at a critical age where children are making the transition from learning to read, to reading to learn.”

Shasta Historical Society has donated prizes for this contest. The first-place winner will receive one adult ticket and one child ticket to the Turtle Bay Exploration Park museum in Redding. The runner-up will receive a copy of “Can You Dig it” by Amanda Baker.

Forest Supervisor Deb Bumpus adds that the “contest is a chance for young people to express connections to the outdoors and places that are special to them through their creativity.”

If your student wishes to participate, you can submit the essays with the entry form by email, [email protected], no later than 5:00 P.M. on October 21st. Stop in any of the Visitor Centers for the contest rules & entry form, or you can download the rules and entry form on the LNF website.
