The middle mile project will connect Red Bluff to Johnstonville along hwy 36 and 89 with highspeed broadband. In July of 2021, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Senate Bill 156 to create an open-access middle-mile network to bring equitable high-speed broadband service to all Californians. The bill provides over 3 billion to build the necessary infrastructure to bring internet connectivity to homes, businesses and community institutions. This has been an ongoing issue for the rural counties this line intersects for years. Plumas county supervisors recently abandoned the idea to allocate APRA funds to expand the network since funding will be coming from the government in bills such as this. The project is to be completed by December of 2026.
