Erik Edholm, acting public works director for Susanville, reported a geothermal leak beneath Main Street that affects only the Veterans Memorial Hall.
The city found the leak in September in a line serving the hall. Edholm recalled a similar problem years ago, which led to a bypass installation.
Repair costs will reach at least $30,000 due to the location under Main Street.
The city informed Lassen County in September that geothermal service to the Veterans Memorial Hall likely would not resume this year.
The rest of the geothermal system remains functional and does not impact other buildings.
The leak highlights challenges maintaining infrastructure beneath busy roadways.
Residents using the Veterans Memorial Hall should plan for limited geothermal heating until repairs finish.
The city’s early communication with the county aimed to prepare for extended downtime. You may want to check for updates on repair progress if you rely on the hall’s facilities.
