Modoc County District Attorney Nina Salarno is informing the public regarding the release of Marques Holman following his court appearance on new charges May 12, 2026, before Presiding Judge Wendy Dier in Modoc County Superior Court.
Holman appeared for arraignment on charges related to the possession of nearly one pound of methamphetamine. Based on the quantity seized, law enforcement estimates this amount could represent over four thousand individual doses. In addition to the current charges, Holman has eight open cases pending in Modoc County Superior Court, including allegations involving felony domestic violence, felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, felony failure to appear, felony vehicle theft, and multiple violations of court orders.
According to court records, Holman also has a significant criminal history that includes prior violent offenses including murder. The Modoc County District Attorney has charged a strike enhancement. At the hearing, Assistant District Attorney Richard Cotta requested that Holman be remanded into custody on all matters. In the alternative, the prosecution requested that the court impose bail and require Holman to remain within Modoc County while his case is pending.
The Modoc County Probation Department also recommended that Holman be remanded on all charges. Judge Dier denied those requests citing he was not a threat to public safety and ordered Holman released on his own recognizance under the supervision of the Modoc County Probation Department. Arraignment was continued to Thursday May 14th.
District Attorney Nina Salarno expressed serious concern regarding the court’s decision to release Holman despite the nature of the charges, his extensive criminal history, and multiple pending cases. “The people of Modoc County deserve to know when serious offenders are released back into the community despite objections from law enforcement and prosecutors,” said District Attorney Salarno. “The Modoc County District Attorney’s Office, alongside our law enforcement partners, are working tirelessly to address the escalating drug issue in our community. Given the significant quantity of methamphetamine involved, the defendant’s criminal history, and his multiple pending cases, I find it shocking that the court does not view this as a serious public safety concern.” District Attorney Salarno also commends the work of the Alturas Police Department, particularly Sergeant Cody Widby, for their efforts in removing these dangerous drugs from the community.
