The Lassen Union High School District will stop providing bus service for Shaffer Elementary School students starting with the 2026-2027 school year.
This change follows a formal notice given to Shaffer School earlier this month. The district will continue bus service for the current school year under an existing contract.
The decision stems from a shortage of qualified bus drivers in the Lassen Union High School District. The district’s superintendent confirmed efforts to communicate the issue to Shaffer School since March, including emails and board discussions.
Shaffer School Superintendent Dr. Joshua Blackburn shared the news directly with the community through a Facebook post. He emphasized that transportation is a necessity for many families and assured that the school is actively working on a new plan.
Dr. Blackburn outlined plans to develop and manage Shaffer’s own transportation program. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in finding a solution that keeps students safe and ensures reliable travel to and from school.
Lassen County Superintendent Patty Gunderson clarified that her office was not involved in the decision. She noted that Shaffer School receives state funding for transportation, and creating an independent bus service is not unusual. For example, Janesville Elementary School operates its own bus system.
Parents concerned about the future of student transportation can expect updates as Shaffer School works on next steps. The school also recently posted a job ad seeking bus drivers to support this effort.
