The Modoc Community Organization for Rescue and Public Services (MCORPS) class has kicked off the new year with an active and engaging schedule. Class is taught by Sheriff Tex Dowdy and Office of Emergency Services Deputy Director Renae Sweet, the program focuses on providing students with practical skills through both education and hands-on training to prepare them for community service during emergencies.
So far, students have toured Cal Fire’s Devil’s Garden Camp, completed CPR and first aid certification, and participated in a mock search operation using the Incident Command System. Additional training has included DUI and drug-impaired driving education, patient packaging techniques, and wellness sessions.
The program has also featured a diverse lineup of guest speakers from various local agencies, including the Modoc County district attorney, Alturas Police and Fire Departments, Modoc County Probation, a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer, a Modoc Superior Court judge, California Highway Patrol, Modoc County Behavioral Health, and a pathologist from Siskiyou County.
The Modoc County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to Modoc High School and its staff for their ongoing support, highlighted by the installation of a new sign above the classroom door.
Looking ahead, students are preparing for a mock jury trial and anticipate more hands-on activities as the program continues.
