Fire Prevention Week Tips for Safe Use of Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home

SHARE NOW

This week is Fire Prevention Week and  Susanville Fire Department was on the morning show stressing the importance of proper handling of lithium-ion batteries.  The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the National Fire Protection Association are highlighting the importance of lithium-ion battery safety with the campaign: “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”

Lithium-ion batteries power many everyday devices like smartphones, laptops, power tools, and toys. While convenient and powerful, if used improperly or damaged, these batteries can overheat, catch fire, or even explode.

Follow these key safety tips to reduce fire risks:

  • Buy only listed products: Choose devices and batteries with a certification stamp from a nationally recognized testing lab to ensure they meet safety standards.
  • Charge devices safely: Use only the charger that came with your device or an approved replacement. Charge on a hard surface—never under pillows, on beds, or couches.
  • Avoid overcharging: Unplug or remove the battery once fully charged.
  • Recycle responsibly: Don’t toss lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins. Use certified battery recycling locations; visit call2recycle.org to find one near you.
